Today’s Reading: Matthew 17:10-27 

Everyone struggles with problems that appear overwhelming. This is why Jesus told His disciples, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matt. 17:20,21)  Jesus wanted His disciples to realize that God was greater than any problem.

Jesus recognized that faith would help people focus their attention on God’s power rather than their limited resources. At the end of WWII, Allied forces searched farms and houses looking for snipers. At one abandoned house, almost a heap of rubble, searchers with flashlights found their way to the basement. There, on the crumbling wall, a victim of the Holocaust had scratched a Star of David. And beneath it, in rough lettering, the message: I believe in the sun–even when it does not shine; I believe in love–even when it is not shown; I believe in God–even when he does not speak -Robert Schuller.

Have you ever thought about your faith being a living, growing thing? Mustard trees grow to a maximum height of 21 feet tall, which means the root is 63 feet in the ground, straight down. While the tree is only 21 feet full grown, its branches are 72 feet full grown. Like the Mustard tree, our faith needs to spread out to others even over three times as much as for ourselves.

The mustard tree is an evergreen tree; it doesn’t shed its leaves, nor fade. The challenge facing us today is the use the faith God has granted us. God has wondrous assignments for us to carry out and all we require is faith in Him. To believe He will do what He said He will do.

Father, Thank You for giving us faith to trust in You. Help us to remain evergreen. In Jesus’ name, Amen
