The origin of the district town Uelzen can be traced back more than 735 years. Uel-zen is the economical and cultural centre of its agriculturally-orientated hinterland, surrounded by its delightful Ilmenau meadows and by three natural preserves.
Uelzen offers an attractive scenery for living, working and spending a holiday. It is a town in which history is respected and in which the past meets the future, act-ing as harmonic complements.
One of the world’s most beautiful train stations is located in Uelzen. It was redes-igned in consideration of Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s schemes as a cultural and environmetal train station. The ÌHundertwasser-Bahnhof Uelzen’ is in walking distance from the historic timbered-centre. The pedestrianised shopping area and art spots create a special scenery. Cosy Cafes and restaurants invite their guests to remain for a while.
Uelzen’s cultural offerings promise memorable moments. The Theatre by the Ilmenau offers a varied programme that is especially suited to the culturally aware. The castle Holdenstedt, which locates the regional museum and a unique glass collection, is the highlight of the ÌHoldenstedter Schlosswochen’, a cultural event with a fascinating programme of concerts, exhibitions and lectures. Every three years a flute competi-tion with international participants is dedicated to the musical heir of Uelzen, Friedrich Kahlau.
The town’s landmark, the ÌGolden ship’ can be found in the ÌSt. Marien church’.
The unique medieval goldsmith piece was brought to Uelzen by Hanseatic salesman. The ÌUlenköper-monument’ which represents the history of Uelzen and serves as a tourist attraction at the same time, can be found nearby the church.
